The SMH did a cover story on Perdomo’s social networking activities today.

And while we certainly appreciate the exposure, we were disappointed by a few things.

The journo, Ben Cubby, rang to talk about legislation that the Federal Health Minister is apparently going to table today regarding tobacco advertising online. We haven’t seen it, so I said I couldn’t comment. Ben then asked me if the online activities I do could be considered advertising and I explained that there’s a big difference between advertising in the public arena and creating online forums or communities where people can discuss their hobby. We talked about lots of other things, including the health science on cigars versus cigarettes and I quoted him the findings of the US National Cancer Institute.

Unfortunately 99% of my quotes didn’t make it into the piece (as usual), and the one he did use was pretty meh. The prose also suggests I called social networking a “grey area”, which weren’t my words at all.

The biggest problem we have with the article, though, is the final quote from Mike Daube, chairman of the National Preventative Health Taskforce, who says “There is no cause for any promotion of a product that kills one in two regular users.” As the rest of the article centers on cigars, he makes it sound like cigars kill one in two regular users – which is total nonsense. That data *might* be accurate for cigarettes, but it certainly isn’t for cigars. As usual, all tobacco products are just lumped in together, which is inaccurate and misleading.

Anyway, it’s nice to get our brand on the front page of a major daily paper. With the current state of the government’s hard-on for tobacco in all forms, and the media’s usual unwillingness to talk about facts, then I’m not expecting any overly positive coverage. All things considered, I think we did okay out of it.

I just hope it leads to more people trying a Perdomo!

There is a serious lack of quality cigar-themed art available, so we thought we should correct the situation!

For every dollar you spend, we award you points which you can then redeem with Perdomo products. You can think of it as our “Frequent Flyer” programme.
